Rotary, founded in 1905, is an organisation of business and professional people who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Today, 1.2 million Rotarians belong to over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's critical issues. The Rotary motto is ‘SERVICE ABOVE SELF’
Clubs meet on a regular basis, which allows members to build firm friendships. Every Rotarian has a right to attend any Club meeting, anywhere in the world.
THE ROTARY CLUB OF PONTELAND
The Rotary Club of Ponteland was founded in 1964 with 27 members of the business community and is still going strong, 46 years later, with 32 members including one of the original founder members.
The Club meets Tuesday at 12.15 p.m. at the Ponteland Golf Club, except on the second Tuesday of the month, then the meeting is at 7.00 p.m. A two-course meal is served and normally there is a guest speaker who will cover a subject of particular interest. On the 5th Tuesday of a month the members gather with guests for a friendly meal at a venue to be arranged.
The Club has strong links with the local Junior, High and Middle schools sponsoring an annual “Young Musician of the Year” and candidates for “Rotary Youth Leadership Awards”.

CLUB NEWS Christmas Events 2012
Rotary President Bob Crosby presented a cheque for £1250, collected in the run up to Christmas, to Alison Barton, Chairman of Newcastle Save The Children Fund with Julia Freedman and Rotarian Alan Hall. She thanked the Rotary Club for their continued support and the residents of Ponteland for their generosity. The Club also wishes to thank Waitrose and Dobbies who gave permission for collections to be made on their premises.
The Toy Collection again produced an excellent return of new and good quality used toys that were distributed to St Cuthbert’s Care, Barnardo’s, Surestart, Auton House, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and others to benefit over 3000 children in the local area. Particular thanks go to one donor who gave about £1000 worth of items, which included an X-box, a karaoke machine, musical instruments, CDs and games.
The ever-popular Carol Concert raised £325 for Children North East and £250 for Bedlington Salvation Army.
