![]() Ponteland United Football Club About Us Ponteland United, formed back in 1900, joined the Northern Alliance at the start of the 1983/84 season, at the same time as Seaton Delaval and West Allotment Celtic. Initially under Ken Scott, Ponteland proved to be a difficult side to play against, but without ever claiming any Alliance honours. They did however meet West Allotment in the final of the 1984/85 Challenge Cup at St James' Park but lost to a late Les Yeoman goal. After Scott's departure to Seaton Delaval in the summer of '87 Ponteland's next manager, Paddy Lowery, again established the club as an excellent cup side. In 1995 former Sunderland player, Barrie Wardrobe, stepped into the hot seat as player manager. His time as manager must be considered relatively successful with the club winning the Northumberland F A Senior Benevolent Bowl for the second time in 1996, finalists in the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup in 1998, four times finalists in the Stan Seymour League Cup and runners up in the Premier League twice. Wardrobe resigned at the end of the 2003 season due to personal and business commitments and Jarrod Suddick, son of Newcastle United star Alan Suddick, was appointed player manager. Jarrod's playing career was sadly interrupted by a severe cruciate ligament injury sustained in a cup match against Carlisle City 3 January 2004. This was a blow to both player and club. The 2004/05 campaign got off to a disastrous start with Ponteland collecting only three points from the first seven games. Nevertheless the relatively young and inexperienced squad which Jarrod and coach Steve Baxter had assembled stuck together and turned in some impressive performances in 2005 notably defeating league runners up Ryton 5-1 away and defeating Seaton Delaval in the final of the Senior Benevolent Bowl 2-0. Progress has continued in the current season and although being hit by injuries to key players during the first half of the season the team is currently occupying a top six position and remains in three cup competitions. The club remains hopeful that more silverware will be obtained by the end of the season.
