 Ponteland Duck Race 2011 The Rotary Duck Race has been an annual event on the River Pont since 1988, except on the odd occasion when adverse river conditions have necessitated it’s cancellation.
Last Sunday the sun shone, the people came, and the ducks swirled down the River Pont to delight the crowd being serenaded by a Fairground Organ. When they weren’t hoping to see their chosen duck finishing in a prizewinning place, they were on the ‘bouncy castles’, having their faces painted, or sampling some tasty titbits, courtesy of Waitrose. Gary Thomson's ice creams proved very popular, as did Amanda Simms’ swish coffee machine and the Popcorn & Candy Floss stall. An innovation this year was the cake stall staffed by Sarah Briggs and other girls from Ponteland High School.
The Fire Service and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team mounted displays. Judging of the races and retrieval of the ducks were in the capable hands of the Ponteland Scouts.
Cowell’s Nurseries and the Triple Eight Motor Company won the two sponsored Business Boat Races. All prizewinners of the Adult and Children’s Duck Races have been contacted.
The event raised over £1,500 for local and overseas Rotary charities and the Rotary Club wishes to thank all those who donated prizes or came to support an enjoyable Village event.
